The resources you normally hear people using to prep for step 2 are normally ones like uworld, amboss etc. However, I decided to use the Boardvitals question bank for my step 2 preparation. These were my thoughts on it.

I specifically liked Boardvitals because unlike the other question banks I’ve used the questions were very direct. Let me explain what I mean. Now just to be clear actual NBME questions are not in any way direct. However, the fact that BoardVital’s questions are direct and to the point helped because they allowed me to have a clear understanding of a certain topic.

For me, any time a question bank leans too much towards sounding too cryptic or tries to disguise the question stem to make the questions seem harder, this makes it harder for me to actually learn the subject matter. What ends up happening is I spend way too much time just trying to decode the question stem.

How I used the BoardVitals Question Bank to study for Step 2

I would use the board question bank as a targeted way to test myself on topics I frequently would get incorrect. For example, using the search question feature I made question sets that would only contain questions about difficut topics like Hepatitis B, Hodgkin Disease etc.

Things I liked about the Boardvitals Step 2 Question Bank

One of the things that I am very nitpicky about when it comes to banks is how well you can filter subtopics. For example, during my step 2 study, I very frequently got questions about Celiac disease incorrectly. So to improve in this area I wanted to do questions that tested me on how celiac presents, how it is managed as well as the underlying pathology

With most other banks the most specific I could filter down to was the GI system. However, the BoardVitals question bank allows you to filter questions based on keywords, and then create a practice quiz focused on that specific keyword.
