The Neurology Shelf is a very difficult exam because in addition to the all of the clinical pearls that you need to know for a shelf you also need to know all of your neuroanatomy very well. At first I struggled to find a good resource that would allow me to master all this info however one of the resources that I quickly discovered was True Learn . TrueLearn does a good job of covering the cranial nerves. Specifically they do not go overboard with the Cranial Nerves because the NBME places a lot of emphasis on cranial nerves 3, cranial nerves 7, and cranial nerve 2. Some other resources will go super in depth into the knowing things like the specific pathways of the cranial nerves and knowing all of their innervations. While I think it is important to have a general understanding of that information that is not necessarily what is emphasized on the Neurology Shelf .

What is emphasized on the Neurology Shelf for cranial nerves are knowing the functions of them, knowing whether they are sensory or motor, and knowing what happens when one of these nerves sustains an injury. The questions in the TrueLearn Neurology Shelf Question Bank do a good job of focusing on these aspects of the cranial nerves. Below is an example of how they test the nerves.

When it came to the Neurology Shelf exam, the TrueLearn Question banks were very useful for catching my mistakes before I took practice NBMEs.
