Best Laptops for Medical Students
One of the Most important things that you need in Medical School is a quality and reliable Laptop. your entire life is pretty much going to run on that thing so You really need to invest in something that is reliable and can get the job. With so many different options to choose from it can be hard to decide on which Laptop to use during Medical School. In this article I will be doing a review of the best laptops for Medical School.
I’ll make your life easier and say this. Really I think the only two brands that you should consider are either the Macbook or Microsoft. As far as which to choose from, it comes down to choosing between wanting a fully fledged No nonsense laptop, or whether you want a laptop/Notebook Hybrid.
How to Choose The best Laptop for Medical School
The things which you need to consider are
- price: there are a large range of prices. You can go as cheap as $400 and as expensive as $2500. I personally decided to invest heavily in a good Laptop as it is an important aspect of my educational experience
- retina display: This is important because you need a device which you can read notes from as well as watch lectures from. Nothing is worse than having to squint your eyes at a small screen to watch lectures
- memory/storage: The most important thing I think however is something with a lot of storage space because In medical school you could easily have to download a months worth of powerpoints in single day. The 2022 models go up to 24 GB. The model which I have only goes up to 16 GB of storage and I frequently have to manage the storage. Anything between 16 to 24 GB should be good enough
Best MacBook Laptops For Medical Students
Macbook Pro
13.3 GB storage as well as the 13 inch Retina display. It cost me $1299.00.

MacBook Air
The other popular Macbook laptop is the macbook air. In general this one is cheaper (ranges from 1000-1200 depending on which one you buy), more portable and only goes up to 16GB of memory.
Best Microsoft laptops For Medical Students
Surface Go 3
This functions as aboth a tablet and laptop. THe design allows you prop it up like a tablet using the built in stand, or you can use it as a normal laptop without the stand. This is pretty affordable. Only $449.00
Surface Laptop Studio
Similar to the Surface Go 3, This functions as both a Tablet and a laptop. However it is significantly more expensive, and has a 14.6 inch display.
Surface Laptop 5
This is designed as a laptop unlike the Surface Go 3. Not as affordable: It costs 1099.00. Goes up to 32 GB of storage.
My other recommendation would be to get a monitor of some kind because I often fond myself having to use the split feature on my own macbook. While this seems like it is a good solution it actually slows down your computer a lot and many apps that you have open may not function the same or have the same display when in split screen mode.
Then FInally i’ll say that there are a lot of different software programs that my school used which they only seemed to use on macbooks. One example is Complete Anatomy 2D software. Im not sure how well this works on Windows computers but my school only ran this software on macbooks.
There have also been some people on Reddit who have noted differences in how the flashcards Apps such as Anki work, as well as some differences in the display. This is also something to consider if you like to use anki a lot. Depending on which software you might use, you might want to choose a computer that is most compatible. Hope this helps
Which would I choose as the Best laptop for Medical School
MacBook Pro( 13 inch)
Now I will go ahead and admit this right now, but I think your best bet for the best computer for medical students will be the Macbook Pro. This is the one that I currently use and it has served me well for 3 years now. Additionally I like being in the apple/MacBook ecosystem because it makes it easier to move everything from one device to another.
