Is Online Med Ed Premium membership worth it?: Online Med Ed Review

Online Med Ed is a learning platform for medical students which includes a variety of video lectures that are narrated by Dr. Dustin Williams who is a board certified Internal Medicine Physician. The learning platform consists of a basic sciences as well as a clinical subscription which are both used by medical students. 

Pricing

Medical students will either purchase the basic sciences or the Clinical subscription. Monthly subscriptions for both  is $40.00 per month. In order to purchase for a year it costs $365.00.

Does Online Med Ed have a free trial?

No, however for $0.99, the platform grants you a 7 day trial period.

To access your question bank, just click on topic section which is located  on the menu on the top of the page. This will take you to all of the organ systems included in the topic you want to study.

Question format

The questions are written as board style vignettes which is reflective of how the questions on USMLE are written.

Is There a Mobile app?

Yes. The Mobile App contains the lecture in audio format which makes it convenient to get some reviewing in if you are on the go. The app allows you to do basically all of the things that you could do on the desktop version. The app allows you to download the notes and audio to a saved device so you can review the material offline.

Pros

The explanations are extremely detailed and comprehenscie. However what makes the explanations very different than others is the ecplanatons show you specifically what to pay attention to in the question stem and show you the specific strategy you should use to answer each question.   • PACE

By itself, the Online Med ed Platform guides you on the best way to use the materials. They employ what they refer to as the PACE method of learning.

The PACE method is the learning system which the Online Med Ed platform uses. The P stands for Prime and it involves reading one of the downloadable lectures notes

The A stands for acquire and is referring to watching the video lectures

The C stands for challenge which is in reference to using the Question Bank to quiz yourself on the material in which you just learned.

E stands for enforce, which is in reference to reviewing  flashcards on the lecture materials. It is important to note that the flashcards do not become available until 48 hours after you complete the lecture

I would say the best way to use Online Med ed if I did not have any other study materials would be to imply this method. I would first quickly read through the lecture notes and take notes on it, then I would Spend time watching the video and pausing when appropriate. I would then answer the question bank questions (multiple times), and then I would review all of the information that I learned using their flashcards or the online med ed flashcards from the Anking deck.

Does Online Med Ed provide any free materials?

As stated on their website, all of the video lectures are free. Access to the question bank questions however require a membership.

Does online Med Ed have a book?

Online Med Ed has a quicktables book, a whiteboard book, and a basic sciences Whiteboards bundle which includes all of the information from foundational courses as well as the organ systems. The Whiteboard book costs $49.00, the basic Sciences costs bundle costs $89.00 and the Quicktables book costs$25.00. Additionally,  the platform offers PDF guides on planning as well as a guide which includes helpful strategies on how to beat hard test questions.

Does Online Med ed have flashcards?

Yes Online Med Ed contains flashcards to go along with the lectures. According to the PACE system, the platform recommends that you do the flashcards after you watch  the lecture videos. For this reason, Flashcards are only available for use 48 hours after you have watched the 

Does Online MedEd have an anki deck associated with it

Additionally portions of the anking deck also contain Online Med Ed cards which can be found in the Dorian Deck. To find the OME deck, simply search for the tag when you are inside your Anking deck.

How to use online Med Ed with other study materials?

Online Med Ed videos can be watched prior to answering questions  form another question Bank such as Statpearls or Amboss. These two question banks are good to go over after watching Online Med Ed videos because they allow you to create quizzes based on certain topics that you have just reviewed. Other good question banks that would work well in conjunction with Online Med Ed would be Osmosis and even Medbullets

Additionally Online Med Ed has other tools such as a study Scheduler and To do List which helps you prioritize and organize all of the materials that you may be using for your studies.

The create your own study plan option allows you to tailor a specific program and plan of attack based on which exams that you have upcoming. Just choose which tests you have upcoming and it will walk you through the steps to create a perfect study plan.

Once you choose which tests you will be studying for the platform will give you the option to choose from the organ system you want to focus on.

You can then set the frequency intensity of you studying, by choosing how often you will be going over lessons.

Once you have chosen how often you will be studying, the interface generates a study schedule for you and you are then able to accept it or not.

Cons

  • Some of the biggest cons are that it does not look like there is a way to create a custom quiz.
  • Additionally, the site navigation is poor.
  • The other negative aspect of this resource is that actually finding the question bank is rather difficult when you first arrive at the site.
  • You only get a limited number of downloads of the lecture notes per subscription

How Long is Online Med ed?

The website states that Online Med ed has over 70 hours of video and audio content which cover a variety of specialities.

When is the best time to use Online Med

Many people find that it is most useful during Clinical rotations when you are studying for shelf. If you are MS1 aor an MS2 however Online med Ed does contain a question bank and videos that go along with this material as well as flashcards

Some good alternatives include 

·      Stat pearls

·      Osmosis

·      Amboss

All three of these rival Online Med Ed in terms of quality of  clinical information that you would see on a shelf exam or step 2 exam.

Should You buy it?

I do believe Online Med Ed would be a good thing to buy if you are beginning clinical rotaitons or studying for shelf exams. However if you are a MS1 and are strapped for cash it may be a better idea to go with one of the alternatives.
